City Overview: Sydney
Sydney is the largest city in Australia and is the capital of the state of New South Wales. It is home to many famous attractions including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the instantly recognisable Sydney Opera House. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia and one of the country’s main business centres. Etihad Airways operates flights to Sydney from Abu Dhabi. Take a look at our short guide to Sydney to find out about some of its attractions.

About the City
Sydney is the largest city in Australia and was the site of the first British colony in the country, which was founded in 1788. It sprung up on the hills surrounding Sydney Harbour and has since grown into one of the world’s largest cities. Its population is now approaching five million, swelled by people from the rest of Australia and from overseas who have been attracted by the great lifestyle that it can offer.

The city is the financial centre of the country, and the Australian Securities Exchange and the Reserve Bank of Australia are both based there, along with the headquarters of many large Australian corporations, such as Westpac, the Commonwealth Bank and Caltex Australia. Sydney is considered a hub for fashion, entertainment and commerce in Australia. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the main television and radio broadcaster in the country, is also based in Sydney.

Etihad Airways operates flights to Sydney Airport, which is located in the suburb of Mascot, next to Botany Bay. The airport is approximately 8km away from the city centre and is used for both domestic and international flights.

Attractions
When booking flights to Sydney and planning your itinerary, you may want to consider visiting some of the following attractions.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the iconic sights of the city, and climbing it is an amazing experience. The Bridge was opened in 1932 and, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the structure is the world’s tallest steel arch bridge. You can find out more about the construction of the bridge on a tour that will take you to the top of the steel arch for some breathtaking views.

Opera House
The Opera House

No visit to Sydney would be complete without visiting the Opera House. Its distinctive shape stands out on the Sydney skyline and it has appeared in countless photos. Completed in 1973, the building was inspired by the segments of an orange. It’s a truly striking structure and a great place in which to see a performance, have a meal or take a backstage tour.

Bondi beach

Bondi beach

Take a bus to Bondi, Sydney's most well known beach, for sand, sea and surf. Watch surfers indulge in their love of their sport or maybe have a go yourself.  The beach is patrolled by lifeguards and it is wise to follow their advice about where to swim, as rip tides occur there. If you fancy a 'barbie on the beach', there are coin-operated barbecues for you to use.

Sydney Tower

Sydney Tower

For a 360 degree view of the city, take the lift up to the top of the Sydney Tower. On a clear day, you will be able to see Sydney Harbour and across to Botany Bay and The Blue Mountains. If you are feeling adventurous, take the 'Sky Walk' on the exposed roof, a further 10m higher up.
