Tokyo is the capital of Japan and also its biggest city, although not actually technically considered to be a city. Tokyo is situated on the east side of the island of Honshu and was formed in 1943 with the merger of the city of Tokyo and Tokyo-fu. Tokyo attractions
Tokyo National Museum The Tokyo National Museum first opened in 1872 and was the first museum in Japan. The museum specialises in archaeological objects, historical documents and treasured art objects of Japan. Two kinds of exhibitions are available for viewing at the museum; special exhibitions and regular exhibitions. The museum now holds in excess of 11,000 objects including 624 with important cultural properties and 87 national treasures. The Tokyo National Museum is located in the culture rich Ueno Park.
Meiji Shrine The shrine is situated in Shibuya in Tokyo and was built as a dedication to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. The Japanese people wished to display their affections for their rulers who both died in 1912 and it was for this reason that the Meiji shrine was constructed and their souls enshrined in it on November 1, 1920.
