More about the Seychelles

On a trip to the Republic of Seychelles, you will be arriving in Africa’s least populous nation with around 86,000 residents. Perhaps this is why its spacious spectacular beaches have proven to be so popular.

The island country spans an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, some 1,500km east of mainland Africa, northeast of the island of Madagascar, east of Zanzibar and with Reunion to the south and Comoros and Mayotte to the south-west. It was granted independence from the UK in 1976.

The Seychelles has long been a holiday favourite because of its sandy beaches, clear turquoise sea water and temperate climate. Tourists can easily take cruises of the 16 islands that offer accommodation – ranging from extravagant five-star resorts to affordable hotels.

Flights to the Seychelles land in the capital and largest city Victoria on the north-eastern side of Mahé island, which is the main island of the archipelago.

You're likely to spend your time on one of the three main islands: Praslin, La Digue or Mahé, which is also home to the Morne Seychellois National Park. But many other smaller islands are just as worthy of a visit.

What to do in the Seychelles

Beaches and sports
Many of those travelling to the Seychelles have beaches and relaxation in mind. The Seychelles offers a variety of refreshingly uncrowded beaches alongside the warm Indian Ocean waters. Many beaches are ideal for children as the water remains shallow even at high tide and there are no currents. Others are fantastic for snorkelling or scuba diving.

Besides lounging on the beach, visitors can while away their time on yachts, power boats, catamarans or sailboats. And, if they are so inclined, cast a line from their boats in search of a plethora of fish to catch.

A visit to the Baie Ternay beach, surrounded by National Marine Park waters, is a must for those taking flights to the Seychelles to discover a little piece of paradise on earth.

Shopping
The Seychelles doesn’t have as great a range of shopping opportunities as other countries but you can find many unique items in the market named Buy and Sell in the centre of the capital, Victoria. Expect to find beautiful sea shell and pearl jewellery creations, textiles, straw hats, needlework and crochet, and paintings and woodwork by local artists.
