Peshawar information
Peshawar is the capital of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the administrative centre for Pakistan. Peshawar has been occupied by many different groups over the years including Durand, British, Pashtun, Islam, Gandharan and Indo-Greek until finally achieving independence in 1947.
There was a lot of controversy about the decision to become an independent state in 1947, some people believed that the province should be given to India and others thought it should go to Afghanistan. Until the 1950's Peshawar was enclosed within city walls and it has not grown in size much since then, although the population has exploded making it a very overcrowded and polluted city. Continuing to be a city that links Afghanistan to Pakistan as well as Asia, Peshawar has now emerged as an important provincial city in Pakistan.
