New Delhi information

New Delhi, the capital of India, is a modern and cosmopolitan city. It lies to the south of Old Delhi, in the north of India, and is the political and financial centre of the country.

New Delhi was constructed during the early 20th century and took Calcutta’s place as the capital of India. Much of the city was designed by two British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. It has luxurious hotels, shopping malls, galleries, museums and entertainment venues, but you can also visit neighbouring Old Delhi during your stay to get a taste of the history and traditional culture of India.

New Delhi attractions

Connaught Place
One of the first places to visit on a trip to New Delhi is Connaught Place, also known as Rajiv Chowk, which is situated at the heart of the city. Connaught Place was designed by Luytens and Baker and is modelled on the shape of a wheel, featuring concentric circles and radiating ‘spokes’. You’ll find shops, cafes, restaurants, banks, hotels and a cinema here, and there are also two markets: Janpath, which sells clothes and Indian crafts; and the Palika Bazaar, where you can buy leather and electrical goods, clothes and perfume.

India’s Gate
Another popular attraction in the centre of New Delhi is India’s Gate, which was built by the British during the 1920s to commemorate the British and Indian soldiers who were killed during World War I and the 1919 Afghan War. India Gate is situated on the Rajpath, New Delhi’s main boulevard, which leads from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Presidential Palace, to the Dyan Chand National Stadium, which is used for national field hockey matches.
