Munich attractions
Marienplatz
Munich's Marienplatz, originally named Schrannen, is also known as St. Mary's Square and is one of the most famous landmarks in Germany. Thought of as the heart of Munich by many, the Marienplatz hosts a number of annual events throughout the year such as the Christmas Market, the Fasching Celebrations and the Founding Festival. Marienplatz used to also host tournaments and the city's market back in the middle ages.
Nymphenburg Palace
Work on the construction of the Nymphenburg Palace begun in 1664, it was to be a summer house for Max Emanuel, who was born in 1662. His father, Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria, contracted Italian architect Agostino Barell to design the building. The most famous exhibit in the palace is a painting commissioned by King Ludwig, to the artist Joseph Stieler, called the 'Gallery of Beauties'. |
