Gateway of India
Although India has been independent since 1946, there are still many reminders of British rule within its cities. One of the most famous examples is the Gateway of India, the grand basalt arch that looks out over Mumbai Harbour. It was built to commemorate the 1911 royal visit of King George V and is now a popular meeting place for locals and visitors. It’s a great place to go to watch people from all walks of life going about their business.

Elephanta Island
Take a tour of Elephanta Island and the many cave temples that have been carved into its basalt rock. The main temple on the island is dedicated to the god Shiva and features a six-metre tall statue of the god in his Sadashiva form. The island was named after a large stone elephant which was moved to the nearby Victoria Gardens in 1814.
