Mumbai is the second largest city in India and is home to more than 14 million people. Situated on the west coast of India, the port is a magnet to people from all over the country, motivated by fame, fortune or the fast pace of life in this chaotic and fascinating city.
Mumbai was formerly known as Bombay and only receiving its current name in 1996. The city was built on seven islands and had been ruled by several indigenous kingdoms before being taken over by the Portuguese in 1534 and ceded to the British East India Company in 1668. From the 18th century onwards, it became a major trading port and remains the commercial centre of India to this day.

Gateway of India
Although India has been independent since 1946, there are still many reminders of British rule within its cities. One of the most famous examples is the Gateway of India, the grand basalt arch that looks out over Mumbai Harbour. It was built to commemorate the 1911 royal visit of King George V and is now a popular meeting place for locals and visitors. It’s a great place to go to watch people from all walks of life going about their business.
Elephanta Island
Take a tour of Elephanta Island and the many cave temples that have been carved into its basalt rock. The main temple on the island is dedicated to the god Shiva and features a six-metre tall statue of the god in his Sadashiva form. The island was named after a large stone elephant which was moved to the nearby Victoria Gardens in 1814. |
