Milan is the capital of the province of Milan and the region of Lombardy. The Italian city of Milan has a population of more than 4 million people and its total metropolitan region is estimated to have a populous of more than 7 million, making it the largest city in Italy.
The city of Milan was originally founded by the Celtics and later occupied by the Romans around 220 BC, becoming an important part of the Roman Empire. Milan was also ruled by the Visconti, the Sforza, the Spanish and the Austrians before becoming the Kingdom of Italy in 1796. Milan is now considered to be one of Europe's most prominent industrial and transportation centres, also a key city in Europe for finance and business.

Milan attractions
Museo Poldi Pezzoli Situated in the heart of Milan the museum used to be the home of a famous art collector, Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli. Available to view in the museum are various paintings from the 14th to 18th century including works by Guardi, Pollaiolo, Tiepolo, Piero della Francesca, Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini and Botticelli. There are also approximately 300 other items to view including archaeology, furniture, tapestries, armours, porcelain, Murano glass, carpets and jewellery. Many items have been donated by private Milanese collectors and friends of the museum.
Milan Cathedral The cathedral is of gothic style and took over five centuries to complete, it is the 4th biggest cathedral in the world. Inside the cathedral are various artworks and monuments including the Quadroni, apse, Arcimboldi monument, Trivulzio Candelabrum, presbytery, St. Bartholomew statue, monument to Gian Giacomo Medici di Marignano, three altars, sarcophagus of Marco Carelli, sarcophagi of the archbishops Ottone Visconti and Giovanni Visconti, and the sarcophagus of Archbishop Alberto da Intimiano.
