Hyderabad information
Hyderabad is the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh, on the south-east coast of India, and is known as 'The City of Pearls'. A curious mix of ancient and modern, it manages to host both a high-tech IT industry on one side and a traditional Muslim quarter on the other.
Hyderabad was founded less than 500 years ago and has been ruled over by several dynasties, including the Asaf Jahi dynasty, which controlled the area until the year after India left British control. Although never part of British India, it joined the new country under Nehru in 1948. As a result of the changes of ruler over the years and the predominantly Muslim population, the city is filled with tombs, beautiful palaces and ancient mosques.

Hyderabad attractions
Golconda Fort
Golconda Fort is one of the most impressive fortress complexes in India and was the capital of the Qutb Shahi Kingdom. It’s built against a hillside, and has a 10km outer wall and eight gateways. The fortress contains several royal apartments, mosques, halls and stables. Put some time aside to explore it - it covers an area of 11km.
Charminar
Charminar is the most famous mosque in Hyderabad and is one its major landmarks. The building features four carved minarets, which are almost 50m high. At night, Charminar is beautifully lit and provides tourists with an excellent photo opportunity. A busy market, selling merchandise of all types, is situated next to the mosque and it is well worth exploring. |
