Doha information
Doha is the capital of Qatar and is situated in the Arabian Gulf. Doha is Qatar’s biggest city with a population of over a million people. The city is the seat of government for Qatar and is also the economic hub of the country.
Doha was originally founded in 1825 although it was named Al-Bida initially. The nation of Qatar gained independence in 1971, since then Doha has grown exponentially and received a huge amount of immigrants, so much so that only a one fifth of the population are original Qatari citizens. The largest percentage of expatriates are from South Asia, mainly Indonesia, Bangladesh, Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India.

Doha attractions
Museum of Islamic Art Various exhibits of artwork, stretching from the 7th to the 19th century, are on display at the Museum of Islamic Art. Included in the several thousand artworks are precious stones, wood, textiles, ivory, glass, metal, ceramics and manuscripts. Guided tours are available. There is also a library in the Museum of Islamic Art made up from a collection books and reading materials for anyone interested in the arts of the Islamic world.
Souk Waqif Souk Waqif used to be known as the 'Standing Market' and was an area with various stores divided into three main categories; 'Amayers' or large markets which served retail and wholesale trades people, various craft shops including carpenters, weavers and tailors and many open air stalls for local vendors. Reconstruction of Souk Waqif started in 2004 where modern buildings were demolished and ancient architecture unearthed again, buildings were carefully renovated to keep the look and feel of the Souk all those years ago and streets were given a complete overhaul.
