Located in Sri Lanka, Colombo is the country's largest city and its capital. Situated on the west coast of the Island, Colombo has a population of over 600,000 inhabitants. The city is known as an important trade route due to its large harbor, the Colombo Harbor.
Britain relinquished their colonial rule over Colombo in 1948, when Ceylon was given independence. After this period Colombo went through some very important changes and an entire new culture was born. Although still to this day Britain's influence on Colombo's attitudes, language, food, architecture and can still be seen, after independence Colombians did change their names, religion and general customs. Colombo's economy also grew very quickly.

Colombo attractions
Colombo National Museum Colombo National Museum was originally founded in 1877 by Sir William Gregory who was the British Governor at the time. From it's opening until the last 1900's the museum continued to display natural and cultural heritage but was redeveloped in 1999 to achieve International status. It is not possible to examine the ancient culture of Sri Lanka in one single location; also on display are the Crown jewels of the last King of Kandy which were handed back by the British to the museum.
Gangaramaya Temple Gangaramaya Temple is considered to be one of the most important temples in Colombo. Comprising of several buildings and situated near to Beira Lake, the temple's most prominent features are the Relic Chamber, the Simamalaka, the Vihara Mandiraya, the Bodhitree and the Cetiya. Some of the most eminent scholars to reside at the temple are Pandit Batuwantudawe, Welivitiye Dhammaratna Thero, Weligama Sri Sumangala Thero and Ratmalana Sri Dharmarama Thero.
