Chennai information
Chennai, previously known as Madras, is situated on the Bay of Bengal’s coast, in the State of Tamil Nadu in the south-east of India. It’s seen as a gateway to the south of the country and is known as a cultural centre.
Chennai’s origins date back to 1639, when Francis Day and Andrew Cogan from the British East India Company built a trading post with a factory and a warehouse in the area. The initial settlement that grew up around the trading post later became known as Madras, but its name was changed to Chennai in 1996. Today, Chennai is the administrative centre of Tamil Nadu and is one of the country’s main industrial centres.

Fort St. George
Historic attractions in Chennai include Fort St. George, the trading post built by the British East India Company which marked the birth of the city. Fort St George is architecturally striking and within it you’ll find St Mary’s Church and the Fort St George Museum. Chennai is also home to another museum, the Government Museum of Chennai, which consists of six buildings and includes galleries, a children’s museum and a reading room.
