Changi attractions
The Changi Museum The Changi museum was moved in 2001 (museum is now situated just outside Changi Prison and near to the Changi Airport) and was officially reopened on 15 February 2001, on the 59th Anniversary of the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942. The museum houses various artifacts and belongings of the POWs held in WW2. Storyboards depicting the various events and timelines of WW2 are also to be found in the museum, ones that are related to the area of Changi. There is a section that depicts life in Changi pre-war including the story of how the naming of Changi came about and the occupation of Changi.
Changi Prison Constructed by the British in 1936 as a civilian prison, Changi Prison was to become notorious during the Second World War for housing Allied prisoners of war, mostly British and Australian. A chapel was constructed at the site of the prison in 1944, mostly by Australians, and after the war the Chapel was dismantled and shipped to Australia to be reconstructed and housed in Canberra.
