Brisbane information

Brisbane is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland and is situated in the east of the country, close to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. It’s the third largest city in Australia and is one of the country’s main ports and business centres, as well as being a popular tourist destination.

The Brisbane area was originally home to the Jagera and Turrbal Aborigines, but a penal settlement was established there by the Europeans in 1824, having been moved from nearby Redcliffe. When the area became open to free settlers in 1842, the settlement expanded rapidly, and it became the capital of Queensland in 1859. Today, the city is known as one of the country’s main business hubs, and for its cultural and sporting facilities.

Brisbane attractions

Story Bridge
One of Brisbane’s most famous landmarks is the Story Bridge, which opened in 1940 and links Kangaroo Point with Fortitude Island. The 777 metre long bridge is made from steel and is 80 metres high. Book a place on the Story Bridge Adventure Climb and you can make your way to the top of the bridge for stunning views across Brisbane. If you have a head for heights, visit Kangaroo Point Cliffs, in the centre of Brisbane, where you can have a go at rock-climbing and abseiling.

Queensland Museum
Brisbane has a number of museums and galleries, including the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, and the interactive Sciencentre, all of which are situated in the South Bank area of the city. South Bank is also the location of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, where you can see plays, ballets and operas.
