Beijing attractions
Tiananmen Square Tiananmen Square is situated at the very centre of Beijing and attracts thousands of tourists every day. Imperial offices, located in the Forbidden City, occupied the area that is now Tiananmen Square, connecting the Palace and Qianmen to the Temple of Heaven. Tiananmen means, in Chinese, The Gate of Heavenly Peace and is the oldest standing gate of the Imperial Palace, more commonly known as the Forbidden City and now provides an entrance to the City.
The Temple of Heaven The Temple of Heaven was originally built in 1420 A.D. as an offer sacrifice in the Ming dynasty. The temple is separated internally by two enclosed walls, providing inner and outer parts. Some of the structures enclosed are the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Circular Mound Altar, Three Echo Stones and Echo Wall. Most of the structures are connected by the Sacred Way, more commonly known as the Vermilion Steps Bridge.
