Athens information

Athens is the capital of Greece and the largest city in the country. Since the 2004 Olympics Athens has undergone an architectural 'facelift', becoming a more diverse, wealthier and sophisticated city. Trendy hotels, shops and restaurants continue to open to support the increase in tourism. One of the most significant changes has been the banishment of Automobiles in the city resulting in one of the longest pedestrian promenades in Europe.

Athens is surrounded by the mountains Parnitha, Ymmytos and Pendeli, extending up from the peninsula that reaches to Central Greece and the Saronic Gulf to the West and South of the city. The central commercial port of Piraeus is located just a few kilometres from the Athens, near the shores of southern Attica. With mild winters and hot summers the city attracts tourists all year round, welcomed by the 4.5 million inhabitants.

The Parthenon
A visit to the Parthenon is a must, it being considered to be one of the most famous buildings in the world and one of the most well known surviving buildings of Ancient Greece. Over 2,500 years old, the Parthenon stands atop the Acropolis of Athens and was built to pay homage to the goddess Athena (the building was to hold a 40 foot statue of the goddess of Athena sculpted by Pheidias). Originally built as a Greek temple the Parthenon has been a mosque, a fortress, a treasury and a church over the years.
