Amman is the largest city in Jordan and its capital. Amman is the country's cultural, commercial and political hub, housing over 2 million people. The first inhabitants of the city of Amman were documented over 10,000 years ago, around 8,500 B.C. Amman began to grow in the early 1920's when it was made the capital of Trans-Jordan by Emir Abdullah.

In the Roman period of occupation Amman was named Philadelphia, and was not actually named Amman until the time of the Ghassanian era. There are many things to see in Amman including Omayyad Palace, El-Malek Abdullah Mosque, the Archaeological Museum of Jordan, the Citadel, the Museum of Folklore, Costume, and Jewellery, the Roman Theatre and the historic centre.

The Citadel
The Citadel of Amman, or Jabal al-Qal'a as it is known in Arabic, is situated at the centre of the city. It is considered to be one of the world’s oldest inhabited places (continuously), stretching back over 7000 years. It also is a symbol for the start of the religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. There is an open air museum on site to be explored and houses many artefacts including items from other historical sites in Jordan.

Jordan Archaeological Museum
The Jordan Archaeological Museum is situated on Citadel Hill in Amman, it was built in 1951. Artefacts from all archaeological sites in Jordan are house in the museum. Collections are arranged in chronological order; Paleolithic, Pre-pottery Neolithic, Pottery Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, Persian Period/Iron III, Hellenistic Period, Nabataean Period, Roman Period, Byzantine Period and Islamic Era.
